Santa Fe Chamber Urges Congress to Act on DACA Legislation DACA Decision Will Affect Local Economy The Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce supports timely federal legislation that will benefit both DACA immigrants and local employers who are anxious to hire talented local residents. Santa Fe has almost full employment. An unemployment rate of under 4% means that anyone who is willing and employable can find a job of some kind. Local employers are seeking qualified staff in many different industry sectors. The “dreamers” who came to this country at an early age form a talent pool and workforce that have enjoyed education in the United States, and are now using those learned skills in productive jobs. We as taxpayers have invested in their education and are now enjoying the returns as they become part of the workforce and put their talent and skills to good use in our community. Often these young people have outstanding attitudes, aspirations and goals. Any policy that removes this existing trained and skilled population from the local workforce will have a substantial and negative effect on local businesses that are eager to hire qualified staff and the local economy as a whole. The Chamber urges your support to pass legislation that ensures stability for the DACA “dreamers” and helps local employers plan and grow their businesses.
