Interfaith Coalition for Public Education Community Action Forum: Our Schools: What we can do! April 7 2016 5:30 – 7:30 Higher Education Center 1950 Siringo Rd (across from SFHS) PLEASE JOIN US AND OUR PARTNERS TO STRENGTHEN OUR ALIGNMENT AND COLLECTIVE IMPACT! The Interfaith Coalition for Public Education is a network of citizen volunteers who are deeply concerned about the alarming dropout rate in the Santa Fe Public Schools. We believe that public involvement is critical to change. Our mission is to support quality public education so that every child realizes full potential from birth to career. The Coalition focuses on two priorities: supporting student academic achievement and engaging the community to support public education. Community Engagement Forum April 7 2016 5:30 – 7:30 at HEC All community members are invited to attend, and develop action steps for project they are interested in (or new projects). The 10 projects listed below reflect suggestions from over 200 participants in the 3 Forums on our schools held last fall. Coalition team members leading each project are listed (* indicates continuing project) • Math, Computer Science, and ESL Tutoring at SFHS* - Lynn Heffron, Robb Thomson • Volunteer Support for ECO*- Lynn Bickley; Sharon Eklund • Support Teacher Development; Link Retired Educators to SFPS Needs- Lynn Heffron, Vickie Ortiz, Lois Rudnick • Volunteer Hub/Cross-City Education Volunteer Structure - Lynn Heffron, Robb Thomson, George Packard, Nancy Peterson, Lynn Bickley • Truancy Task Force - Elise Packard, Ellie Edelstein • Think Tank on Wrap-Around Services- George Packard • Communications Team to Boost Community Awareness* - Nadine Stafford, Melinda Silver, Lois Rudnick, Charles Cole, Robb Thomson • Make a Clear Plan to Engage Faith Communities* -George Packard, Nadine Stafford • Increase Education Funding- Melinda Silver, Ellie Edelstein, Elise Packard, Charles Cole • Early Childhood – leaders TBA Forum Goals Engage more community members. Collaborate with other groups to move these projects forward. Enlarge the teams working on projects, refine and implement key actions for each project. Report regularly on project progress at monthly Coalition meetings. Forum sponsors: the Santa Fe New Mexican and the Higher Education Center. Forum partners: Communities In Schools of New Mexico, First Presbyterian Church of Santa Fe, Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association, Santa Fe Association of Realtors, Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce, Santa Fe Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Santa Fe Chapter of the NAACP and Temple Beth Shalom. Community Forums Fall 2015: The Interfaith Coalition hosted 3 interactive Community Forums on Our Schools—What Does It Take…to have high achieving schools? … to evaluate student progress? … and to boost graduation rates?” Each Forum featured a panel of community experts followed by breakout groups for to discuss related action steps. 6 Arenas of Action resulted from community discussions at the 3 Forums: Expand Workforce Readiness, Adopt Youth And Family-Centered Programs and Services, Implement Collaborative Network System, Strengthen the Culture of Learning, Elevate The Teaching Profession, Expand Educational Funding Coalition contact – Lynn Bickley lbick09@gmail.com
